It's that time of year again... time to pick college football's most prestigious player of the year. There are five finalists nominated to receive the Heisman this Saturday in Manhattan including Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, Mark Ingram, Toby Gerhart and Ndamukong Suh. This is a tough decision because these are all five great candidates that deserve to be in the running. Tebow is always a great competitor having already won the Heisman as a sophomore in 2007, this would be a great accomplishment for him to become a two time winner. McCoy has had a great season and led Texas to the BCS National Championship. He was also nominated for the Heisman last season. Suh was awarded the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive player, which wasn't an easy task because he had to beat out a lot of top defensive competitors. Ingram is someone i didn't even think about when I considered Heisman nominees, but now the mix, it makes perfect sense. Ingram broke Alabama's school record for rushing yards this season and in my opinion he is really the only person who put up good numbers against Florida. This brings us to the final candidate. Gerhart is a running back from Stanford who led the nation in rushing yards this season.
When I first looked over the list of nominees, it seemed like Tebow or McCoy were most likely to receive the honor. However, I think the other contenders may give them a run for their money. More specifically, I think that Toby Gerhart just might pull it off. Even though he is from a team that will not be competing for a BCS championship, he still had a great season and he surprised everyone by coming up with all of those rushing yards! Besides that, he plays good, solid football and he can catch the ball. He also ran all over USC's defense and that's no walk in the park.
Anyways, that's just my opinion. We'll find out for sure on Saturday night!

I'm pulling for Gerhart, I really hope he wins it. As a Buckeyes fan, I do NOT want to see Tebow win, although he is a great quarterback, he can't be a two time trophy winner. Also being a Buckeyes fan, I wouldn't mind seeing Suh win just so Woodson from Michigan isn't the ONLY defensive player to win the Heisman. As for McCoy, in my mind, the only way he wins the Heisman is for his career, which is wrong due to the fact that it is not a career award.
ReplyDeleteGoing into the presentation I was putting my money on Toby Gerhart from Stanford. I really like his style of play and it is different from traditional backs lately in that he just pounds the football. With that style, which some people believe has kind of disappeared, he led the nation in rushing and rushing touchdowns. However, the voting system now seems to be a "What have you done for me lately?" system. That is why I think Ingram won it. His huge game against Florida that catapulted Alabama in the national championship is what won him the award. People seemed to forget Gerhart's huge games against USC and Notre Dame and Ingram's poor game against Auburn. Nonetheless, I think he is definitely deserving.
ReplyDeleteEven though I already know Ingram won the award, I still want to comment on this. I think Gerhart should have won it based on the reason that he led college football in every rushing category. He was ahead of Ingram in every stat that was available. How is that fair that Ingram gets it, but he doesn't? Just like how Barnes lost to Tate for best reciever even though he was ahead of him in every category as well. It just amazes me on how people vote a determine not just the award winners, but also who plays for the national championship.
ReplyDeleteBrandy, I am impressed that you keept up on this! I am an avid Ohio State football fan and watch every game. However, I do not keep up with all the NFL games. Congrats to all the players and all their hard work.
ReplyDeleteSince we all know Ingram won the award now. I think this year was one of those years that nobody really stepped up and claimed the trophy. Some say Suh did but it's hard to say if he had the biggest impact just because he plays DT. Tebow really didn't put up his huge numbers like previous years. McCoy was in the lead majority of the season but his game against Nebraska was terrible so that lost it for him. Ingram had a very solid year and he finished if off by playing a great game against Florida to make it to the National Championship game so the nod went to him because of it. So yes I think they got it right.
ReplyDeleteI saw something about how everyone is Tebowed out or McCoyed out. We like the fresh faces that come onto the scene like Ingram who was a sophmore and the third sophmore in a row to win the heisman. Just something to think about. I understand no one had a break out season, but heck a defensive tackle was even included in the discussion.
